witchy_rachel , but until this past weekend, I'd never read one of her books aimed at younger children.But Which Witch? is great! It's very neatly plotted and very funny ... and I'm not really a big fantasy fan (I still remember feeling disappointed on discovering the four Pevensie children headed off into a magical world of talking lions and fawns instead of down a secret passage after smugglers! :) ). I'm really not sure how much appeal it would have to boys, given the story revolves around a wizard who needs to take a wife (his assistant tries to organise a contest in the vein of Miss World, lol), but I guess I'll find out when Gabe reads it! But I'll definitely try her other books aimed at younger readers now, as well as her other YA titles when I come across them. In fact, I've already started reading The Secret of Platform 13.

I had exactly your reaction to Over Sea, Under Stone! Even so it's the only book in the series I quite like and fans think it's the worst.

I'm wondering if you're seeing something I erased from my post, as I mentioned Over Sea, Under Stone, then erased it as I was getting waffly and I was getting asked to play Mousetrap. Does that mean it can be seen by others though not by me? *worries*
But it was odd because I'd waffled on at some length about how I'm not really big on fantasy and mentioned Under Sea, Over Stone and The Dark Is Rising as two huge disappointments after I'd heard so many people rave about those books - especially the second one. Then I thought I was digressing too much and was getting hassled to play a game, so cut all the waffle out. I thought perhaps it had stayed, but all crossed out, like you see in some posts.
